To twerk or not to twerk?
In 2013 the white pop star Miley Cyrus performed a so-called ‘twerk-choreography’ together with her African American dancers at the Video Music Awards. Their booty shaking to heavy beats caused public indignation, but at the same time, plenty of people were happy to twerk along with Miley. So what was all the fuss about? Pop culture often features non-Western dance forms. But where do they originally come from, and is it acceptable to randomly use these influences in pop culture? In Situation mit Doppelgänger, the theatre maker Oliver Zahn and the cultural anthropologist Julian Warnerconstantly changes the context of familiar dance forms.
