Do you like to talk about taboos?

‘A Plea for suicide’, she said.
‘Pardon?’, he replied.
‘A Plea for Suicide, that’s the title.’ ‘
You want people to come and see the piece, don’t you?’
‘Yes, lots of people,’ she said.
‘Nobody wants to see A Plea for Suicide!’
‘In Belgium three people commit suicide every day. Worldwide the number adds up to 3 people every second. More men than women. It’s a taboo subject.’
‘Taboos should remain together with other taboos. They don’t belong in a title.’

He closed his ears and she walked on stage. A Plea for Suicide is about a young woman who desperately wants to be able to live her life but who continuously flirts with the idea of taking her own life.

Theatre maker Jozefien Mombaerts about the performance: “It’s a bold title, but I feel that our society sometimes makes ‘a plea for suicide’. In our society the subject is often either dismissed or it is considered abnormal and is judged. I just want people to be able to talk about it.”

Future is Coming

The subtitle of Jonge Harten 2021 is Future is Coming

Shape it, be it, own it!

Jonge Harten offers a diverse program. But where do you start choosing? To clarify things somewhat, we have three main storylines that we are focusing on this year. You can see these lines throughout our program. So that you can easily choose which line suits you best and what you feel like doing at the moment. What are you going for?

No matter what: the future lies ahead of us. And we can influence what our future will be like. What is it you hope for the future? How do you contribute to this? And how do you relate to the future? Will we continue in the way we used to, when we leave the pandemic behind us, or will we radically change our behaviour?

Laat je stem horen!

It’s important that our imagination makes it to the stage, especially now. It’s time to start thinking about how we want to continue after the pandemic, what we want to change and how we want to recover. How are we actually doing? And how are you doing? What is it we want to tell the world? And what does the world want to tell us? Which topics should be on the agenda?

Raise Your Voice

What you have to say is important. The world needs your voice. Raise your voice, just like the makers and performers do in these performances.

Role model

Who are you a role model for? And how do you want to communicate that? Who are your role models? Which voices do you think should be heard more? Let our (theatre) makers guide you to find your voice and let it be heard. Let them be a role model for you during our festival and be inspired.

Performances for and by young people on stage.
