Who are you?

In a series of snappy, short, comical, and personal monologues, Joy Delima will talk about her search for her roots and about her experiences as a young black woman in the Netherlands. She will retrace her roots and look back at her process of becoming political aware with regard to institutional racism and exclusion.

‘It turns out I’m black. I already was, of course, but since I moved to Arnhem I’m constantly reminded of it. I wasn’t concerned about being black at all when I lived in Rotterdam. I was just me, and everywhere I looked there were people like me. But now that I’m the ‘only one’, I suddenly feel the need to take responsibility for The Whole Black Community. I’ve turned into some kind of undercover superhero. It actually happened overnight.’

‘I was looking at my father’s family tree and suddenly I came across a page that I’d never seen before. The page was folded in half. On this page, the family tree went all the way back to 1600….’

During her training at the ArtEZ Drama School, Joy Delima wrote a monologue about her own feelings of political awareness concerning racism and exclusion. In this performance she looks for answers to the question ‘Who am I?’.

Jonge Harten offers a diverse program. But where do you start choosing? To clarify things somewhat, we have three main storylines that we are focusing on this year. You can see these lines throughout our program. So that you can easily choose which line suits you best and what you feel like doing at the moment. What are you going for?

No matter what: the future lies ahead of us. And we can influence what our future will be like. What is it you hope for the future? How do you contribute to this? And how do you relate to the future? Will we continue in the way we used to, when we leave the pandemic behind us, or will we radically change our behaviour?

Laat je stem horen!

It’s important that our imagination makes it to the stage, especially now. It’s time to start thinking about how we want to continue after the pandemic, what we want to change and how we want to recover. How are we actually doing? And how are you doing? What is it we want to tell the world? And what does the world want to tell us? Which topics should be on the agenda?

Raise Your Voice

What you have to say is important. The world needs your voice. Raise your voice, just like the makers and performers do in these performances.

Role model

Who are you a role model for? And how do you want to communicate that? Who are your role models? Which voices do you think should be heard more? Let our (theatre) makers guide you to find your voice and let it be heard. Let them be a role model for you during our festival and be inspired.

Performances for and by young people on stage.
