‘She dances with the waves in the shelter of her own voice.’
MAYA MARIA, who emerged from the sands of Terschelling, is the kind of artist who simultaneously disarms and challenges you emotionally. In a mix of Alt-R&B and Artpop, she searches for the contrast between the natural and the unnatural, to capture her story, vision and feelings in music and images. MAYA knows better than anyone how to bring disciplines together into an exciting live show.
MAYA has a drive. A drive that stems from her healing process of forced silence during her long period of illness, which at the time only made her small world feel smaller. Here, the 24-year-old artist learned to nourish herself with an inexhaustible will to make her dreams come true. In this way, she never loses sight of hope. From the embrace of her own arms, she explores the freedom hidden in being a woman and cherishes the ambition to give people who are willing to listen a little more breathing space.
In everything she does, MAYA uses her voice and body to take up space where silence once reigned. Themes such as the madonna-whore complex, sexual freedom and intergenerational blockages form an important breeding ground for her artistic work.
I dare you… to hear her.
