    Every evening, the FIELD programme concludes with a short, in-depth FIELD TALK, moderated by education and theatre maker Minne Thomas.

    In the TALK, Minne, together with the audience and the creators, delves deeper into the themes from the performances on display in the Grand Theatre, offering an opportunity to ask questions, share thoughts and discover new perspectives.

    FIELD PERFORMANCE

A poetic and relatable search for a family.

For the performance Family, theatre maker Louis Janssens invited four actors from different generations to join him on stage. They tell stories, ask questions and seek comfort, support and recognition from each other. It is about how family ties connect us and how they inevitably determine our lives. About blood family and chosen family. About parents, children, growing up and the fear of being left alone. The actors appear on stage as themselves, but throughout the performance they also seem to become more and more like family to each other.

Family is a poetic and recognisable text performance about the universal concept of family. Starting from a queer perspective, they tell a larger human story about having and searching for a family. Not everyone has children, but ultimately we are all children.

In recent years, Louis Janssens has created the solo performance Serenade (#nieuwjong Het TheaterFestival 2021), the duet Analoog with Willem de Wolf (Het TheaterFestival and Nederlands Theaterfestival 2023) and Desire (Het TheaterFestival 2024). Now he is creating the performance Family together with an intergenerational queer cast consisting of Peter Seynaeve (NTGent, Het Zuidelijk Toneel), Maureen Teeuwen (Maatschappij Discordia, mugmetdegoudentand), Mourad Baaiz (Artemis/hetpaleis/Het Zuidelijk Toneel, Schauspielhaus Bochum) & Francis Geeraert (Compagnie Barbarie).

About the artist

Louis Janssens (1995) graduated from the Drama programme at KASK Ghent in 2018. From 2012 to 2022, he formed the two-person collective Desnor together with Ferre Marnef. They created various performances such as Ideale Plaats, #BOS, Galileo and Toverberg. His solo performance Serenade premiered in 2021 and was selected for #nieuwjong at Het TheaterFestival 2021. In 2022, he created the performance Analoog (selection Het TheaterFestival & Nederlands Theater Festival 2023) together with Willem de Wolf at De Hoe. The performance Desire premiered in August 2023 during Theaterfestival Boulevard and was selected for Het TheaterFestival 2024. He is affiliated with Monty as an artistic sounding board. As a teacher, he is involved in the Acting programme at the Antwerp Conservatory.

FIELD was created to strengthen the bond with young talent and to give both the artists and the festival the opportunity to support people in the longer term and to make their “dreams” come true. We focus in particular on students who we feel (after conversations and performances) connect themselves as creators with the world beyond. In a conscious, critical and idiosyncratic way.
